EXTRAHOURS

We are lucky that our students want to spend more time with us beyond CYD AfterSchool. Over the years, extra fieldtrips and special workshops on the weekends, student events, and student interests have evolved into many opportunities that enhance their experience at CYD. We call all these things "ExtraHours" because they allows us to spend more time with our students beyond CYD AfterSchool on weeknights, Fridays, the weekends, and during school vacations.

Field Trips: Each month, we take at least one field trip with each group to one of the many cultural venues in Atlanta. Our goal is to expose our students to new places and begin to open up the world to them.

Student Events: These events include our monthly Honorable Citizen outings for students with good attendance and behavior, an annual GPA awards banquet for students with high GPAs, career fairs with local professionals, spoken word nights, and a back-to-school bbq.

Student Clubs: We currently have 3 clubs for our students, book club, chess club and art club. For book club, we select a new book each month, provide a copy for each student that they can keep, and meet to bring the book to life through activities and discussion. Our chess and art clubs also meet monthly.

Community Service: We organize community service opportunities with our students at least one time each semester.

Summer Camp: Each summer, we offer a week-long summer camp for each group of our students. Our camp is full of fun activities that we do not have the opportunity to do during the school year. Each week ends with a sleepover; for our older students, these sleepovers have given us the chance to go out of town, to the mountains and to the beach.
